Site Evaluation

For this rotation, my site evaluator was Professor Davidson. She took the time to discuss each aspect of my presentation and give me constructive feedback.

For my first site visit, I presented a patient who was a new admission to subacute rehab. This patient had a fall in the presence of alcohol intoxication and injured himself for the second time in a few months. He also had a long smoking history and drug use. Since this was my first site visit, I was unsure of how to properly present my H and P. Professor Davidson patiently listened to my presentation and guided me on how to choose which details to focus on for my future presentations. We also discussed that it is important not to jump to any conclusion regarding a patient’s cognitive status or motivations unless there is clear data to make an assessment. At this site visit I presented 5 drug cards including morphine, mirabegron, metoprolol, rosuvastatin and Epzicom. I chose ones that that had been discussed for various patient cases.

I came to my second site visit feeling much more confident about my presentation. This time I presented a case of a patient who had uncontrolled diabetes and had cellulitis of the groin likely due to his taking Empagliflozin which causes increased glucosuria. I also presented an article on this topic. With the feedback I received from my first presentation, I was able to give a clear and concise presentation of my patient case. I also presented another 5 drug cards which included Tamiflu, Lasix, Levemir, Eliquis and Lisinopril. At this site visit I also discussed the different specialties I had observed at my rotation and the many things I learned.

In conclusion, my site visits with Professor Davidson were valuable learning experiences. She gave very useful feedback on my H and Ps that I will certainly be using in the future. When I first started my rotation, I often found myself becoming a little overwhelmed when my patients were sad or told me they did not want to live anymore. When I told Professor Davidson, she reminded me of the lesson that she taught in Interviewing and Counseling class about caring about others while remaining in your own “circle” so that you can be empathetic while not getting too overwhelmed, and of course deep breathing. I plan to use the feedback I received from Professor Davidson to continue to improve on my H and P writing and caring for patients.
