Type of article: comparative study, retrospective cohort

The purpose of the study was to determine which technique for sleeve gastrectomy has a better outcome, laparoscopic vs. robotic. Information was taken from the 2015 Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) database. A total of 75,079 patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with 70,298 (93.6%) laparoscopic and 4781 (6.4%) robotic. Results showed that the robotic surgeries were associated with more serious complications, longer operating room time, more frequent surgical site infections, and more frequent postoperative leaks at 1.5% compared with .5% for laparoscopic. Length of stay was similar for both groups of patients.

Limitations to the study include the limited number of patients who underwent a robotic sleeve gastrectomy when compared with laparoscopic. Most patients were female and white 79% which is not representative of the overall population undergoing sleeve gastrectomy.  Additional data may show increasing popularity of robotic gastrectomy and different statistics.
