The purpose of the study was to determine the risk factors as well as identifying features to make a diagnosis of invasive liver abscess to expedite diagnoses and improve outcomes. It included 107 patients out of 23,984 hospital admissions during that time period. The authors concluded that risk factors for this condition include diabetes, biliary pathology, male gender, with mean age of 57 years old, and were primarily caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. The presenting symptoms included fever, chills, nausea, and abdominal pain. Those with the best outcome were treated with appropriate antibiotics as well as percutaneous drainage of abscess. Limitations mentioned in the article included incomplete data collection including CRP numbers and symptoms such as jaundice, malaise, and weight loss. Overall, the authors suggest stat abdominal imaging in patients who present with these symptoms and inflammatory markers to prevent complications and sequelae of this disease.
